Advocacy Update

The Department of Labor (DOL) has released an anticipated revision to the FLSA Overtime Exemption Rules.

The Administration released its final overtime regulation increasing the salary threshold below which employees must  be paid overtime for working more than 40 hours a week from $23,660 annually ($455 per week) to $47,476 annually ($913 per week).

This threshold will take effect on December 1, 2016, and it will increase every three years.  Employers will now need to review a range of options to deal with this situation.

Thirteen Chamber members were briefed by Rich Brauer, the Assistant Secretary of the Illinois Department of Transportation on various projects of concern. In addition, Staci Wilson and Ben Brockschmidt from the Illinois Chamber of Commerce updated the group on the stages of specific legislation before the Senate and House.

Chamber representatives met with Senate President John Cullerton, Senate Deputy Republican Leader Matt Murphy, Senator Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, and Senator Pat McGuire.  The Chamber contingency also met with House Republican Leader Jim Durkin, State Representative Natalie Manley, State Representative Margo McDermed, State Representative Larry Walsh Jr., and State Representative Mark Batinick.

In the meetings held with the elected officials, the Chamber representatives discussed mainly the State budget impasse and how that situation is affecting so many businesses, education institutions, and social service agencies.  In addition, topics such as transportation, education funding, pensions, workers’ compensation, health care, insurance, taxes, wage, gaming, independent maps, term limits, and employment law were all brought up during the conversations.
