The General Assembly returned to Springfield on Wednesday, June 29 for the first time since adjourning roughly one month ago. Bi-partisan legislative working groups continued to meet throughout the month of June.
On Thursday afternoon, both the House and Senate approved a stopgap budget and full year of K-12 education funding. This action will authorize the state to appropriate federal funds, provides $720 million for state operations, such as food for prisons and other state facilities, gasoline for state cars and medical care for prisoners or residents of state facilities.
About $670 million will go toward human services and road construction projects will be able to continue.
The budget compromise voted on Thursday boosts general state aid to schools by $331 million. It also provides $250 million more for schools that have high concentrations of low-income students. No school district will get less state aid than it did during the just-concluded school year. About $1 billion is going to higher education, including money for grants made under the Monetary Award Program.
A reminder, the Department of Labor (DOL) has released an anticipated revision to the FLSA Overtime Exemption Rules. The
Administration released its final overtime regulation increasing the
salary threshold below which employees must be paid overtime for
working more than 40 hours a week from $23,660 annually ($455 per week)
to $47,476 annually ($913 per week).
will take effect on December 1, 2016, and it will increase every three
years. Employers will now need to review a range of options to deal
with this situation.
We have also sent out an email this week calling attention to the changes concerning retirment saving options. The Department of Labor
is moving forward with sweeping new regulations that will give them more control over how you save for retirement and leave workers and small businesses with fewer investment choices.
